KILN-WORKED GLASS (GLASS FUSING) - Instructor: Lynne Chappell

Introduction to Glass Fusing (Plate OR Bowl):
This 2 session workshop is a basic introduction to glass fusing. Students will make small samples (coasters) in the first session and a plate or bowl in the second session of your own design. There are many finished samples to draw inspiration from to help you create your own design. There will be some technical discussion on the properties of glass, slumping forms and firing schedules including a take-home handout. We will cover hands-on basic glass cutting, pulling stringer in the torch, and the concept of "volume control" in detail with many samples. Work will be fired in our kiln after class; to be picked up at a later date. Visit our student gallery.

2 Sessions - Course Fee: $160.00 including materials (HST Included)
Course is taught with Bullseye 90 COE glass and material cost makes up $80 of course fee. Class is limited to 8 students, so register early.

Sundays, 9am to 12pm - 2 sessions
April 7 & 14, 2013
(This class will be taught by Tamara Garland with System 96 Glass, this is a more structured class with 6 project patterns to choose from.)

Saturdays, 1pm to 4pm - 2 sessions
May 25 & June 1, 2013

Register at our studio: 604-594-6311

PLEASE NOTE: This class will not teach you how to program your kiln because each manufacturer of kiln uses different digital controllers or in some cases has many versions of their controllers. The manufacturer instruction manual is the best place to learn about which buttons to press on your kiln's digital controller. Our kiln may not be the same as yours so we don't demonstrate how to input the numbers, however we do discuss in detail the speeds and temperatures you need to use in your firing schedules (sample schedules provided in handout).

Each individual kiln fires slightly differently and changes over time as elements and thermocouple age. Every new firing schedule will require a bit of tweaking to achieve the desired result in your unique kiln. We always recommend doing a small test fire project when trying out a new firing schedule or firing for the first time. The staff at Sunlight are more than happy to help you with programming your kiln outside class time over the phone or if you can bring the kiln to us. Also most manufacturers also have telephone support or on-line instructions or support videos that can also be very helpful in the beginning.

JEWELLERY FUSING WORKSHOP:
This two session workshop will cover the basics of making fused glass cabochons (pendants). We will discuss basic full-fuse principles (volume control) and firing schedules for tack-fuse and full-fuse.You will make 8 - 10 full fused cabs, half on the first session which you will finish off with bails etc during the second session.

We will cover several methods of finishing the pendants; drilled holes with pinch bails, glue on bails, wire wrapping and edge grinding for wire wrapping. Remaining work will be fired in our kiln after class; to be picked up and finished off at a later date.

This class is a short/condensed version of the beginner fusing class above with the exception that we don't discuss 'slumping' in detail.

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a jewellery making class, limited instruction on finishing, this class teaches you to make the glass piece, not silversmithing or settings or other wire work jewellery making.

Fee: $90.00 (Including HST) 2 sessions, includes instruction, firing, limited dichro, frit/stringers etc., base glass, 3 sterling pinch bails (or 6 glue on bails) & unlimited small glass pieces from bit box. Additional colored glass, or dichro, or extra jewellery bails, etc. are extra cost. approx $16.00 - $45.00

FUSING ELEMENTS:
Powder Wafers, Kiln-Fired Murrini, Freeze 'N Fuse

Level: Intermediate - fusing experience required, challenging concepts - limited to 6 students

Two days: 10am - 4pm - 2 sessions
Saturdays, April 20 & 27, 2013

Fee: $225 per person (HST Included)

Instructor: Lynne Chappell

Take your glass fusing to the next level. Learn to make patterned & shaped elements that you can add to your fused projects at home. We will learn how to use stencils and glass powders to create fired elements called "Powder Wafers". We will make small pattern slices with frits, rods and stringers. We will learn about molds for "Freeze 'N Fuse", and make objects with glass powders, water and a freezer (way too cool!). You will even get to make your own flexible mold from a found object of your choice or one you've made yourself from clay.

Students Will Learn How To:
1. Create powder wafer elements by sifting glass powder over stencils.
2. Create kiln formed Murrini (pattern slices) to take home using a rod pod form.
3. Try the "Freeze&Fuse" technique to make fusible elements from candy molds and other mold methods.
4. Learn how to make your own custom RTV silicone molds (or GELFLEX) for "Freeze&Fuse" or "lost wax method" for glass casting.

Students bring to class: Please bring your own glass cutting tools (if you have them), an apron, and a 10x10 cake pan or similar tupperware to take home your elements. Also bring small found objects for freeze 'n fuse castings and stencils for the powder wafer (ie. open textures such as lace) if you have them. Please bring a lunch or there is a Subway on the corner of 80th and King George (5 blocks away). There will only be about a 1/2 hour break.

Class must have at least 4 students to go ahead so bring a friend.
